Up for auction is an expressive and graphically masterful showpiece of oriental knotting art: A semi-antique Bergama rug from West Anatolia (Turkey), hand-knotted around 1940. [1] This rug represents the archetypal, powerful style of the tradition-rich Bergama provenance. The nearly square inner field is dominated by a monumental, stepped central diamond in vibrant madder red, which stands out effectively against the deep midnight blue of the main ground. The center of the medallion is adorned with a fine star rosette, surrounded by archaic, white tribal and protective symbols (Ashik and comb motifs). In the four wide-set corner spandrels, large, octagonal ivory medallions with geometric cores frame the composition perfectly. This masterly collector's piece is framed by a classic, multi-band border. The wide main border displays a rhythmic interplay of stylized chalice and floral motifs on a white ground, elegantly contrasted by dark minor borders with fine diamond and dot decoration. The rug is characterized by the use of lustrous, soft wool on a robust wool warp and glows with excellently preserved natural colors. It is in a generally good condition with a beautiful, stable pile structure. A timeless, decorative classic and a high-caliber exhibit for lovers of Anatolian weaving tradition.
