Up for auction is a stately and visually imposing antiquity of Caucasian knotting art: A monumental Azerbaijan rug runner of considerable original length, hand-knotted around 1900. This magnificent runner (gallery-format rug) captivates with its powerful, vibrant coral-red main field. Along the vertical central axis unfolds a row of three large, stepped diamond medallions in indigo blue and ivory, followed by a monumental, arrow-shaped terminal medallion. The field is richly filled with typical, archaic tribal and nomadic motifs: Stylized trees of life (comb motifs), geometric blossoms, and protective amulet symbols densely fill the space, flanked by deep blue spandrels at the narrow ends. This dynamic composition is framed by an elaborate, multi-band border. The white main border displays a rhythmic, geometric wine-leaf or chalice (leaf- and-calyx) pattern, elegantly contrasted by colorful minor borders with a delicate wave and zigzag design. The rug is crafted from high-quality, lustrous wool on a robust wool or cotton warp and impresses with absolutely authentic natural dyes. It is in a generally good condition with a beautiful, stable pile structure. Due to its stately dimensions and brilliant color palette, this runner is an absolute eye-catcher for prestigious hallways, entrance halls, or large galleries. • Condition: Generally good condition (very well-maintained, authentic state of preservation with stable substance and original fringes). • Dimensions (Metric): 400 by 120 cm.
