Description Up for auction is an ethnographically highly interesting collector's item of Anatolian textile art: An antique Bergama kilim mafrash from West Anatolia, created around 1900. This fine flatweave originally served as the face panel of a traditional, box- shaped nomadic transport bag (mafrash) used for carrying valuable household goods. The piece fascinates with its classic tripartite composition: The two outer panels feature highly complex, geometric diamond and medallion structures in finest pattern variations. The wide, brick-red center field provides an elegant contrast and is artfully woven with delicate, intricate tribal and protective symbols (amulets) as well as stylized animal or human figures (nomadic motifs). The textile object captivates with its use of characteristic natural dyes such as deep indigo blue, madder red, and unbleached wool. It is in a remarkably good, authentic state of preservation with a firm weave structure. An excellent exhibit for collectors of antique nomadic and tribal art, perfectly suited as a decorative wall hanging or accent rug.
