A miniature from around 1850 depicts the Red Fort in Delhi, built between 1638 and 1648. In 1857, it was the residence of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar. During the Indian Rebellion, mutinous soldiers (sepoys) and civilians sought his support, forcing him to become a symbolic leader of the uprising.
After suppressing the rebellion, the British took over the fort, used it as a military headquarters, and demolished many buildings within and around the complex to ensure better control and defense. 27 by 20 cm.
