Lot 153 A SMALL JAPANESE LACQUERED LOW TABLE TAISHŌ – EARLY SHŌWA PERIOD (C. 1912–1940)

Reference: ART2002340

This striking small Japanese low table, dating from the Taishō to early Shōwa period, is a magnificent example of traditional urushi (lacquer) craftsmanship at its most expressive.
The rectangular top is coated in a vibrant orange-red lacquer with an intricate mottled pattern, achieved through a technique known as negoro or kawari-nuri, which produces a rich, textured surface resembling natural stone or molten lava. The swirling, layered design shimmers with depth and dimension under the light.
The table is supported by four legs, heavily lacquered and carved in a bold, organic form, echoing the naturalistic aesthetic of the surface. The legs and apron display dynamic curvature and visual weight, grounding the lively top with earthy stability.
Meant for use in a traditional Japanese interior, this low table served as a display platform for art objects, floral arrangements, or tea utensils, adding elegance and drama to any space.
