A HELLENISTIC GOLD RING WITH AN INTAGLIO SHOWING A LOCUST, 2ND/3RD CENTURY BC

Reference: ART600918

A Hellenistic ring made from composite gold sheet elements with a carnelian intaglio of a locust on a sprig of wheat. Upon careful examination one can see that the engraver has chosen to represent a locust rather than a grass hopper. This is somewhat unusual given the image of that particular insect through the ages as a harbinger of famine.
