A large gold ring with a carnelian intaglio showing the portrait of a middle aged man with strong features. The ultra realism shown on subject of this intaglio puts the period of this ring to the period of the late Republic to the first years of the Roman Empire. The features are somewhat exaggerated to portray the age of the subject, in particular the jowls, the furrows on the forehead and the folds at the back of the neck. All in all a wonderful example of Roman portraiture.
