Up for auction is a characterful and color-intensive antiquity of Caucasian knotting art: An antique Shirvan rug from the Eastern Caucasus, hand- knotted around 1900. This rug captivates with its archetypal, geometric design language on a deep, brilliantly preserved indigo-blue ground. The longitudinal axis is dominated by three monumental, stepped star medallions (Lesghi stars) in powerful madder red, ivory, and warm ochre tones. The precisely drawn zigzag and hook contours lend the composition a remarkable dynamism. The inner field is also filled with fine, traditional minor motifs such as stylized birds, small trees of life, and geometric protective symbols. This masterly collector's item is framed by a classic, multi-band Caucasian border, whose main band features a rhythmic Kufic or running dog pattern on a white ground. The rug is in an authentic state of preservation with an expressive patina and a stable pile. As an honest testament to its history, the two narrow ends (fringe finishes) are no longer completely intact and are slightly shortened (see photos). A fascinating and decorative exhibit for lovers of historical Caucasian weaves. • Condition: Authentic condition with a good pile; the upper and lower ends/fringe finishes are historically incomplete (collector's condition). • Dimensions (Metric): 148 by 110 cm.
