Lot 216 ARABIC MANUSCRIPT ON THE SCIENCE OF INHERITANCE, COPIED IN MECCA AND DATED 970 AH / 1563 AD

Arabic manuscript on paper, comprising 281 folios and two fly-leaves, each page arranged in 19 lines of exceptionally neat black Naskh script. Titles, important words and catchwords are highlighted in red ink. Housed in a deep brown leather binding. A specialised work on the Islamic science of inheritance (ʿilm al-faraʾid), devoted to the principles and practical application of the laws of succession. The work is arranged in seven chapters, addressing the inheritance of sons; the shares of parents in the presence and absence of children; the inheritance of husbands and wives; and the shares of maternal and full siblings. The text examines numerous cases of inheritance, including complex and difficult problems, analysing their circumstances and providing solutions according to the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. The manuscript was copied in Mecca by ʿAli ibn Muhammad ibn Yaʿqub ibn Uthman, who identifies himself in the colophon as “the poor servant, seeking the forgiveness of the King, the Forgiving.” The copy was completed on Saturday, 25 Rajab 970 AH / 1563 AD. 14.5 × 20.5 cm
