Lot 335 AN OTTOMAN LAMPAS-WOVEN SILK TUNIC, TURKEY, EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Reference: ART3008543

An Ottoman lampas-woven silk tunic, of traditional T-shaped form with long sleeves and an open front, woven throughout in green silk with repeating bands of Arabic calligraphy executed in cream-colored thread. The inscriptions are arranged in alternating broad and narrow zigzag panels.

The wider bands bear pious invocations including: “Salutation and peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah” and “Allah is my Lord and there is none but Him; Muhammad is [Allah's] friend.”
The narrower bands contain blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad, reading: “O Allah, bless the most noble of all prophets and messengers,” followed by a benediction upon the first four Rightly Guided Caliphs: “And may Mighty Allah be satisfied with Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman and 'Ali, and the rest of the Companions, all of them.”
