Tall round wickerwork ikebana basket with a round bottom, a fixed handle, consisting of multiple braided thin susutake 煤竹 (‘smoked bamboo’) bamboo strips with a nice light brown patina.
The body braided in a regular crosswise pattern.
This loosely plaited basket is dated from the Shôwa period (1926-1989).

Susutake, bamboo material was collected from traditional thatched-roof houses that had been exposed to decades of smoke from a hearth or cooking fire, therefore the baskets made of sustake displays a deep rich patina that is hard to attain by color-lacquering.
