Kosuge Kôgetsu, sometimes known as “Hounsai”, is born in 1932 in the Chubu Region, and found his artistic roots in Hanyuda, Niigata Prefecture. The third son of the renowned bamboo artist Kosuge Chikudo, he honed his craft under his father’s tutelage. Kosuge delved into tea ceremony studies, channelling his earnest and charismatic personality into creating baskets. His accolades include the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Prize and the Niigata Nippon Prize. Commissioned by the Niigata Governor in 1972 to craft a basket for the Emperor of Japan, he gained full membership in the Japan Craft Art Association six years later. Despite acclaim, he broke away from Japan’s rigid exhibition system in the 1970s, choosing independence to focus on crafting baskets for tea masters and clients.
