A set of five beautiful large lacquer sakazuki 盃 (sake saucer cups) featuring a refined design depicting a pair of porcelain pots filled to the brim with sake, placed at the base of an ancient pine tree 松 (matsu) near the edge of open water. A ladle rests gracefully in one of the pots.
The design is beautifully rendered in hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) using various shades of gold and silver on a vibrant vermillion red background.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
