An impressive lacquered bajô’jingasa 馬上陣笠 (horseback samurai hat), featuring a slightly upturned visor. The front is decorated with a red maki-e crest mon 紋 (crest) depicting itsukan ni yotsume 五つ鐶に四つ目 (“four eyes in five handles”). Flanking the crest are a pair of expressive shishi 獅子 (guardian lions), rendered in red takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) on a glossy black lacquer ground rôiro’urushi 蝋色漆 (black lacquer), with red lacquered rims.
At the apex, the helmet is surmounted by a five-tiered patinated copper tehen no kanamono 天辺の金物 (decorative apex fitting), shaped like a chrysanthemum kiku 菊 (chrysanthemum). The reverse features a cord ring with a gold silk age’maki 揚巻 (decorative tassel).
The interior is coated in vibrant red lacquer, adorned with scattered gold leaf specks, and fitted with a cotton-filled head cushion and cotton straps.
