A MONGOLIAN SILVER PRAYER WHEEL, 19TH CENTURY

Reference: ART400208

The wheel is chased with a central band of lanca characters between a band of vajra and flowers and a petal band. Tied to the wheel with a leather band are a string of pierced coins. With a metal stand. 40. cm.

Provenance: Paul Rutten collection, Amsterdam. Jan Brummelhuis collection, Amsterdam.

Catalogue notes: A prayer wheel would contain in the cylinder a roll of prayers, and wheels such as the current lot would have been carried around by a monk or a layman and turned clockwise while reciting a prayer. The higher the number of rotations, the greater the merit.
