Rare lacquer writing box (suzuribako), the sides and lid decorated with a continuous design depicting dragons playing with a pearl in gold and silver makie-lacquer on a sprinkled gold ground in the todidashi-technique (sprinkled designs revealed by polishing). Inside sprinkled gold (nashiji). The box contains four small containers including an inkstone with a hollowed out gourd-shaped part with a gourd-leaf and a silver lobbed waterdropper with dragon motive and a ‘pure silver’ mark. The lid shows at the inside a cresent moon in a clouded sky also in the todidashi-technique. In a transparent lacquered box. Late Edo Period.
