A PERSIAN MINIATURE DEPICTING A ROSTAM FIGHTIING THE DEMON, 19TH CENTURY

Reference: ART3001592

Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, laid down on an album page, depicting Rostam fighting a Mythical beast. Rostam is a mythical hero of ancient Persia, son of Zal and Rudaba. In some respects, Rostam's position in historical tradition is similar to that of Surena, the hero of the Battle of Carrhes. His character has been imbued with many characteristics of Rostam's historical personality. The latter was always presented as the strongest of Iranian heroes, and the atmosphere of the episodes in which he intervenes is a strong reminiscence of the Askhanian period, whose life and work is described in the epic poem Shahnameh. Painting: 20.5 by 12 cm.
