Reference: ART100909

Each basket is of foliate form, with each panel delicately pierced with figures amongst pavilions separated by carved floral bands at the shoulders. Each stands on four floral feet attached by openwork peony and foliate friezes. The upright handle is carved with figures amongst flowers and birds, the apex is carved with bats and pierced cash symbols. The covers are similary decorated, the panels are each separated by bird and flower flanges, and are surmounted by a lady and lotus finial on a platform supported by four bird and flower spandrels. The panels of the interior of the basket are carved with peonies.

Condition: one basket with a bird and flower sprandrel reinforced with glue; the other basket with one loose handle, two bird and flower spandrels missing, a small area of restoration to the reverse of the lady (approx. 1 cm.); both baskets with slight loosening of the panels; chips and fine cracks to the ivory consistent with age.
