A Chinese gilt-lacquered wood altar box, cover, and stand

The front of the cover is decorated with a panel in high relief depicting a narrative military scene, most likely from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, surrounded by a border of grape and flower vines, the reverse is carved in relief with prunus and rocks, surrounded by a border of shuangxi characters and Buddhist knot. The sides of the box are decorated with flowers and precious objects. The interior is set with a further structure with openwork relief narrative panels. The aprons of the stand are delicately carved and pierced with squirrel and grapes, all supported on four Buddhist lion feet.
