An ivory carving of Budai

The Laughing Buddha is modelled seated with the right knee raised, wearing long open robes open at the chest to reveal his belly, his right hand holds a cloth bag and his left hand holds prayer beads. A boy attendant clambers on his shoulder.

Catalogue notes: an ivory Budai of similar design and size dated to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 15 May 2013, lot 932.
