Syed Haider Raza (1922–2016) stands among the most celebrated modern Indian painters and a founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group. His early works explored expressionist landscapes, but his artistic language evolved dramatically after moving to France, where he pioneered a unique fusion of Indian spirituality and Western modernist abstraction. Central to his mature style is the iconic bindu—a metaphysical point representing creation, energy, and the universe itself—around which he constructed complex geometric arrangements inspired by Indian philosophy, architecture, and colour symbolism.
