A LARGE CAMEO OF TIGRANES II OR 'THE GREAT' IN SARDONYX, 1ST CENTURY BC

Reference: ART600974

A large cameo of the best known king of Armenia, Tigranes II or better known as 'The Great'. His long reign is known for the expansion of his realms to become the most powerful ruler between Rome and Parthia.
He is shown wearing his 'tiara' which resembles the headwear of the east at the time. Upon the tiara we can see the ghosting of two eagles on the upper area, flanking the star. While these have somewhat faded, it is possible that these were appliqués which have now fallen off.
