A fine intaglio in garnet of a Roman merchant ship sailing to the right. The single masted sailing ship was the staple transport method of the Mediterranean during the time of the later Republic and then till the end of the Empire. These ships transported the huge amount of grain, oil and wine which as required to keep the large cities supplied with victuals. It might be tempting to imagine that such a ring would have belonged to a ship owner of the period.
