A Roman hollow gold ring with a cameo of a sleeping dog. Around the setting a line of filigreed granulation has been added. A very popular choice of subject in Roman times, the sleeping dog literally represented the guardian of the home. The wealth created by the Roman Empire meant that many had property which was worth defending and the loyalty of the owner's pet was unrequited so a fitting symbol to wear.
