A large Byzantine gold ring, of the so-called 'basket' type with an octagonal shank. The bezel is made of a repousse bowl with ridges in relief to which are soldered solid globules. The stone is a cabochon spinel or a similar crystalline red stone, with the top cut or polished flat.
