A Roman balsamarium in the shape of a sheep skin. The hides of sheep have been used since time immemorial to carry water and this balsamarium is made in the form of such a skin.
At the neck there are two lugs for suspension and the vessel would have been suspended by chains to be suspended from the wall. Probably a stopper would have been in place at the top, this has no longer survived.
Height: 11.5 cm. Bronze Roman 1st c.AD.
