A CIRCULAR LEAD PLAQUE SHOWING ATHENA, GREEK, 4TH-3RD CENTURY BC

Reference: ART600848

A circular lead plaque showing a three quarter facing head of Athena. This very popular type almost certainly traces its iconography to Phidias' Athena Pallas in the Parthenon in Athens. The probable purpose of this plaque was to possibly be a prototype to make copies in other materials such as terracotta. The type is also found in the famous coinage of Syracuse at the time.
Diameter: 10.5 cm. Lead. 4/3rd.c.BC.
