A BYZANTINE BRONZE BASIN, CIRCA 5TH-6TH CENTURY

A large hammered bronze basin from the early Byzantine period. This vessel is of a very well documented type widely found in the Levant. They are typically associated with use in the kitchen.
While they are usually found without decor, here the artisan has decided to make a double row of slanted incisions which might present a palm frond motif around the inside of the rim.
