A charming small bronze statuette of a sphinx, solid cast and chased. The Sphinx, with a female form, comes to us through Greek mythology and her purpose seems to be for guardianship in all its forms.
In the case of this example we might guess that it was an applique for either furniture or a vessel of some sort. The piece is extremely well modeled and finished to a high standard and is the product of a metropolitan workshop.
Height 4.5 cm.
