A MARBLE HEAD OF ALEXANDER, HELLENISTIC 2ND-3RD CENTURY BC

Reference: ART600726

A very fine miniature head of Alexander the Great in micro-crystalline or fine grained marble. This exceptionally fine small sculpture is engraved extremely skillfully, with the precision of a hard stone cameo. The hair retains traces of pigment and the other surfaces are polished to a very high finish. Traces of a light calcarious deposit are seen on the face. The sculpture is virtually intact bar a small chip at the front traction of the bust and an insignificant break at the tip of the nose. The surfaces at the back have been finished with a file and this small need might well have been attached to a figurine or the such.
The sculpture would have suited the purpose of keeping images of Alexander in domestic surroundings which were so popular at the period.
Fine grained marble. Hellenistic.
Height: 7 cm.
