A MARBLE VENUS STANDING WITH A CUPID ON A DOLPHIN, ROMAN, 2ND-3RD CENTURY AD

Reference: ART600724

A charming rendering of the goddess of beauty rendered in white marble, semi nude and standing next to cupid riding a dolphin. She stands facing slightly left with her left hand covering the knot on her robes. She has a diadem and an armlet which still bear traces of pigment, usually vermillion. In this version she might well be holding a mirror in her now missing right hand. Such sculptures were inevitably for domestic settings either indoors or out. They were extremely popular as seen by the number that have survived to the present day. The head of Venus is re-attached.
Height: 37.5 cm.
