A HEAD OF MINERVA OR ATHENA, ROMAN 1ST CENTURY AD

Reference: ART600723

A well preserved head of Minerva/Athena in white marble. This pleasant head of Minerva/Athena, one of the Capitoline gods of Rome, would have been a popular choice of subject for the statuary which adorned the houses and villas of the wealthy. Normally this would have been part of a bust or more likely, a large statuette, of the goddess. As the work has no signs of a running drill being used so one would date this the first century AD.
White marble. Roman 1st c. AD.
Height: 12 cm.

PROVENANCE
From the collection of Antoni Sikorski, London. Sikorski was born in Poland and joined the Polish Armed Forces in the West during WWII fighting alongside the British Army. After the war he settled in London where he formed his collection.
