AN INTAGLIO WITH A BUST OF SOL, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD AN INTAGLIO WITH A BUST OF SOL, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD

Lot 1734 AN INTAGLIO WITH A BUST OF SOL, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD

Reference: ART600630

A bloodstone intaglio showing a facing bust of Sol (Helios) wearing a radiate crown. Traces of corrosion show that this was mounted in an iron ring. A charming intaglio showing an almost frontal view of the view of Sol. His face slightly turning to the right while his shoulders point to the fact that his body is turning left. It would be tempting to believe that this was a miniature representation of the Colossus at Rhodes, copies of which were circulated widely, even though the original had crumbled at least 250 years before this stone was made.
11 by 9 mm.
