A ROMAN INTAGLIO OF THE PERSONIFICATION OF ANTIOCH, 2ND-3RD CENTURY AD

Reference: ART600620

A Carnelian Intaglio of the Tyche of Antioch, seated on a rock facing the viewer with a personification of the Orontes swimming at her feet. She is flanked by a figure of Tyche (Fortuna) and a man in military costume, possibly the emperor. A quite crude but robust wheel cut rendering of the subject.
The Tyche of Antioch sculpted by Eutychides of Sicyon was one of the best known and most commonly reproduced statues in Antiquity. The statue is very often found on intaglios and the fact that Tyche or Fortuna is represented on this piece next to the deity stresses luck as a factor in life.
