A ROMAN INTAGLIO SHOWING A BOY ON A DOLPHIN, ROMAN, 1ST CENTURY BC-AD

Reference: ART600619

A very fine representation of a boy on a dolphin, probably Taras. He holds a kantharos in his right hand and rests his other hand on the tail of the animal. Dark orange/brown carnelian. Slight crackling inside the stone, intact.
A charming rendering of Taras, the son of Poseidon, riding a dolphin which had saved him from a shipwreck. Once on land he founded the city of Tarentum. A very popular subject and composition in Antiquity.
16 by 13 mm.
