This statue is part of a series of roman copies of Greek originals from the 5th century BC, which were very popular with Roman clients at the time.
Depicted in this sculpture, Aphrodite or Venus, the goddess of love and fertility, is shown wearing long, draping robes with an emphasis on her feminine physique. The statuette has been made of the main casting and then both arms were made separately and attached to the main body with two small bronze rods or pins. The fine casting suggests a workshop from a metropolitan centre such as Rome or the like. A remarkable work of art, mirroring the large scale prototype very well.
17 cm. height, excluding base stand.
