A finely engraved intaglio of impressive proportions in a rich dark orange coloured carnelian of a draped bust of Apollo holding in front of him a lyre. The subject is rendered in delicate low relief which is typical of the period of Augustus and this can be paralleled with the famous intaglio from the Marlborough collection of the emperor himself. (Ref: The Marlborough Gems by J.Boardman). The intaglio mounted in a modern gold setting.

CONDITION
The intaglio has been restored with no missing pieces otherwise in good condition.

PROVENANCE
Acquired from a reputable Dutch art dealer ( J.R.A ) in the 2000s, Ex collection of professor Timmers. (the first rector magnificos of the university of Maastricht).
