An intaglio from banded agate engraved with a peacock perched on a basin with a flower (?) in the bowl. This piece is a very good example of what is thought to be Italic or Roman Republican work. Typical is the use of the drill and the choice of material, in this case an agate with two lighter coloured bands. So popular was the material that many glass intaglios exist copying the banded stone very realistically.
Banded agate, with some adhering calcareous deposits.
14 by 8 mm.
