A Roman intaglio showing the bust of a woman facing left. She is draped and although the wheel cut technique does not allow for much detail, she has the appearance of women as seen in the second third of the second century AD.
The stone has been treated on the upper face with an alkali in order to change its colour and allow the engraver to create a very effective contrast between the field and the type. This technique is used quite often durning this period.
