Lot 1752 A CARNELIAN INTAGLIO OF AN EAGLE WITH A GAZELLE, 2ND CENTURY AD

Reference: ART600219

A carnelian intaglio of an eagle tearing at a deer/gazelle in a robust wheel cut style. On the concave back we see part of a head of Heracles (?) almost certainly from a much earlier date.
Strong red/orange carnelian, with an interesting example of an earlier intaglio being re-engraved for the use of the material. The eagle dates from the 2/3rd century AD while the engraving on the back with the drilled globular treatment might date from the late Republic.
9.5 by 7.5 mm.
