A BYZANTINE BRONZE INCENSE BURNER WITH GREEK DEDICATION, CIRCA 650-800 A.D

A bronze censer of the so called 'Palestinian type', consisting of a heavy cast segmented or 'poppy head' body with a raised foot and straight rim and three circular lugs for suspension for the chains. Usually given to the 6/8th c AD. The Greek description on the rim which is showing the name of the individual who donated the censer to the church to where it was donated. The lugs are decorated with three pellets which serve to strengthen the attachment of the circlets to the body. The object has a wonderful dark olive green patina.

Property of a Munich gentleman collection acquired on the Europe art market in the 1990s.

NOTES
