A LARGE INTAGLIO IN CARNELIAN OF JULIA DOMNA, CIRCA 200 AD

Reference: ART6001203

An exceptional intaglio in carnelian of Julia Domna, the wife of the Emperor Septimius Severus. She is shown facing left as the sealing would have faced right, as is the normal convention. The Several dynasty were keen on establishing their family as permanent rulers of the empire and therefore their portraits have survived in relatively large numbers although this intaglio is exceptional.
Carnelian. Roman. c.200A.D.
27 by 22 mm.
