Lot 119 A ROMAN PLASTER MOULD FOR A CYLINDRICAL RED WARE VESSEL, 4TH-5TH CENTURY AD

Reference: ART6001089

This plaster mould is half of an ensemble which would have served to make cylindrical red ware vases from the workshops of central Roman north Africa. The type shows the facing bust of a woman who might well have been a famous saint as Christian subjects were very popular at the time even for objects with a secular use. There is a possibility that they might represent St.Helena or female saints from Carthage.
