A Roman intaglio of Aelius, who was Hadrian's appointed successor who predeceased him in 138 A.D. The intaglio shows the bust of the caesar to the right. While Hadrian's portraits are relatively common, those of Aelius are far rarer. The style of the ring, with a diamond surround, suggests a date of the early 20th.c.
