Up for auction is a museum-quality rarity of the highest collector's value: An antique Karadashli Yomud Chuval from Turkmenistan, crafted around the middle of the 19th century (circa 1850). Chuvals constituted the most prestigious and important wall bags within the Turkmen yurt. This magnificent piece is attributed to the rare sub-tribe of the Karadashli (within the Yomut confederation), which is highly coveted among collectors. The inner field captivates with a masterfully balanced grid system: Nine striking, geometric primary güls are flanked in alternation by finely drawn chemche secondary güls, whose delicate cross structures are highly characteristic of this early era. The textile work of art glows in deep, noble natural dyes such as the characteristic Yomut aubergine red, walnut tones, indigo blue, and unbleached natural wool. The traditional aesthetic is completed by the wide, solid-colored lower end-skirt (elem) attached in the lower quarter, which emphasizes the antique original character. This over 170-year-old piece is in a generally good condition with a stable weave structure and a beautiful patina. A high-caliber exhibit for specialized museums and discerning collections of Central Asian tribal art. • Condition: Generally good condition (excellently preserved, authentic collector's condition). • Dimensions (Metric): 84 by 114 cm.
