Up for auction is a magnificent and rare masterpiece of Caucasian textile art: An antique Baku Soumak from the Caucasus, crafted around 1900. This exquisite piece captivates with its eponymous, highly complex Soumak weaving technique (wrapped brocade), which gives the weave its characteristic, relief-like structure and exceptional durability. The design features a classic Caucasian pattern with three large, geometric central medallions in deep indigo blue on a vibrant, brick-red main field. The field is richly patterned with stylized stars, floral elements, and traditional tribal motifs, framed by an elegant, multi-band border with a running dog (wave) design. The weave is in generally good condition with strong, authentic natural dyes. As an honest testament to its more than 120-year history, the piece features a professional, old restoration in one corner; furthermore, the fringes are missing on one corner (see photos). These authentic signs of age emphasize the historical character of this type and do not detract from the magnificent overall appearance in any way. A sought-after collector's item and a representative eye-catcher for sophisticated spaces. • Condition: Generally good (honest collector's condition, old restoration in one corner, loss of fringes at one corner). • Dimensions (Metric): 190 x 152 cm.
