The demi-god held alof in the arms of pluto with Cerberus crouched at his feet.
Overall height 310 cm. Base H 86 by 105 by 95 cm.
As with of Bernini's early works, the original was commissioned by Cardial Scipione Borghese, and executed between 1621 an 1622. Bernini was only 23 years old at its completion. Soon after its completion the statue was given by Scipione to Cardial Ludovski, who transported it tot het Villa Ludovski. After later having been puchased by teh Italian State, the work was returned to the Villa Borghese in 1908.
