AN EARLY STONE AMULET, POSSIBLY JEMDET NASR OF A HARE, 3RD MILLENIUM BC

Reference: ART4001902

A marvelous variegated marble amulet of a hare in a crouching position.

The hare, as was the rabbit, used as a symbol of re-birth since the earliest times. To this day the rabbit is still a symbol of the spring and of Easter.

The drilled eyes may well have been inlaid with a pigmented power and has now disappeared.

32 mm. long. Pale marble with red striations. Near Eastern, 3 rd. Millennium B.C.

Ex-European private collection acquired before 1970
