Lot 177 A PERSIAN ENGRAVED BRASS CELESTIAL GLOBE, 19TH CENTURY

A finely engraved Persian brass celestial globe, comprising a spherical body mounted within a framework of graduated circular rings and supported by four slender columns rising from a circular base. The globe and surrounding rings are decorated with intricate Arabic and Persian inscriptions, engraved astronomical markings, geometric borders and representations of the twelve zodiac signs, together with the names of cities across the Islamic world. A small camel motif provides a distinctive decorative detail. The instrument is richly ornamented throughout, with contrasting golden brass surfaces and areas of natural patination. Height: 27 cm.
