Lot 168 A NIELLO-INLAID SILVER CASKET, TURKEY 19TH CENTURY

A finely crafted rectangular silver casket with a hinged, slightly raised lid, decorated throughout with intricate niello inlay. The lid features a central oval floral medallion surrounded by elaborate scrolling foliage and framed by bands of interlacing geometric patterns. The sides are similarly adorned with rectangular panels of finely engraved floral sprays, set against a dark niello ground and enclosed within prominent key borders. The edges are accentuated with delicate beaded and linear ornamentation. The casket is raised on four rounded silver feet. The interior is plain, with a hinged lid and a smooth silver surface, displaying natural tarnishing and signs of age. 358 gr.
